The Story Behind the loved Local Bakery and Cafe in Forbes
The Bakehouse opened it's doors in 1990. With humble beginning's of a love for good food & beautiful company The Bakehouse journey has been one to watch. Read on to learn about the woman behind your favourite Forbes fooderie and discover the history!
Kerrie's Story
In June 1990, at 15 Templar Street, Forbes Country Bakehouse was born. We had one baker and four staff and operated solely as a bakery, bread, rolls, cakes, pies and sausage rolls.
During this period, the trends in food changed and we physically ran out of space for the four bakers and twelve staff, that we had grown to accommodate.
1990s
1996 saw us move next door to 17 Templar Street, which had a much bigger footprint. We could now house more equipment, cool rooms, and a growing staff. We then added three small tables and six chairs to align with the growing trend to sit, relax and enjoy coffee and a sandwich or cake.
Over the next nine years, the trend for eating out and espresso coffee ramped up to another level, so a vast need for seating confronted us.
2000s
2005-6 saw us cut a hole in the wall and add a kitchen and ample tables and chairs, both inside and out the front. As this was an extension of us, The Xtension was born.
At this point, both sides had their cooking and beverage areas. Of course, this saw yet another increase in staff, and a menu also came into play
2010s
2013 saw my daughter come on board with lots of energy and a whole lot of new ideas.
It was here that The Xtension and Forbes Country Bakehouse began the major transformation to become a united business, "The Bakehouse”.
2020 & Beyond
All the cooking comes out of the kitchen, and the bakery houses the drinks station, service area & all your bakery goods.
We currently have four bakers and a total staff of 22, and the evolution continues. So watch this space.
